30 YEAR MEMORIAL FOR PETER MOORE-JONES & PETER ANSIN

This year marks the 30-year anniversary of the tragic helicopter crash that had five Matarangi Beach Estates (then owner of the Golf Course) employees on board that sadly took the lives of the Head Greenkeeper Peter Moore-Jones and Assistant Greenkeeper Peter Ansin on 11 October 1994.  Survivors were Louise Falleni (still living in Matarangi), Paul Clague (now Whitianga) and Peter Carroll (since passed) who was also the Fire Chief of the Matarangi Volunteer Fire Force at the time.

To mark and honour this day and the families & friends of those involved, we are bringing back the Peter Moore-Jones Memorial Trophy Tournament.   This tournament used to be held on an annual basis with the last one being held 10 or 11 years ago, we plan to put it back on the annual calendar.

The tournament is being run as a fundraiser for the Coromandel Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust, with a portion from every entry fee being donated to the charity along with raffles and an auction.  This has in the past always been a popular and fun tournament and we intend to make this year just as special.  Sort your teams and register asap to support this great cause and honour our past staff, survivors and families from what was a very tragic day for a [then] very small community. Families and friends of those involved are returning to Matarangi for this day so let’s give them a warm welcome with a well-supported event.

A memorial service will be held for family & friends on the 2nd tee where a memorial plaque sits for the 2 Peter’s (as they are affectionately known as), this will take place before the Golf Tournament for those who wish to attend.
